Life is filled with special moments. Some are fleeting, intimate, and private. Some are celebrated, shouted from the rooftops, and are mostly considered as milestones. May it be someone’s first time celebrating prom, someone’s 18th birthday, and someone celebrating marriage. These special moments are what makes life worth living. We tend to exert our time and effort to make these events memorable, from decoration to food— and especially clothes.
When my daughter got the invite for her first ever prom, I was more excited than she was. The best mother-daughter bonding for me is shopping together, and it was enjoyable for the both of us all the more so, due to our love of fashion. At the time, we tried on a lot of dresses before she found the perfect one. It took us all day, but when we found it, I knew from the smile on her face that she would be wearing it on prom night!
That was years ago, and online stores weren’t considered as the best option to shop back then. I wish we had the choice to look for specifically ball gown prom dresses back then. I wanted my daughter to feel like a princess at prom, that’s why we opted to narrow our search to ball gowns.
During my wedding, I had the same problem with the daunting task of choosing the perfect dress. It took me three weeks of endless fitting sessions to say yes to a dress before I found the one that was perfect for me. Again, in my time (I feel so old!) online stores were basically unreliable. Luckily now, the internet has advanced to the point of having multiple stores available in just one click.
For my daughter’s wedding, she would definitely have it much easier. There are so many dresses involved in a wedding if you think about it: the actual wedding dress, your bridesmaids’ dresses, the flower girl’s dress, and even the reception dress. As for me, it won’t be hard to look for mother of the bride dresses. Something like this:
I know I have been daydreaming a lot, but this is also a reminder to take things slow, enjoy the moment, as it will pass, like all things do. Having photographs is the closest thing we have to preserving a moment perfectly, freezing a second in time. Wouldn’t you love to look back when you’re older and think, “Everyone is beautiful, and wow that dress is gorgeous!”
More than the dresses, I am truly excited to experience the special moments life has in store for me and my loved ones. Despite challenges, stress, and the daunting pressures of mundanity, I will endure. These little moments are what we live for, don’t we? There are so many new people to meet, places to visit, food to taste, evening gowns and prom dresses to wear, and most of all: life to experience.
