Help and Support

4 / 14 / 13

During my father’s wake, relatives came over. As they always say, death seems like a reunion, you’ll get to see long lost relatives during this time. True enough, I saw some of my cousins that I only met during our childhood years.

So sad that one of them have fallen into the hands of a bad influence friends, doing nonsense things  have fallen into the prey of bad vices like drinking alcohol and taking prohibited drugs. The elders decided to send him into a san diego drug rehab like center around their area. We were all praying that he’ll soon be healed and will be led into the right path.

Laser Eye Surgery

3 / 5 / 13

url

I was in grade five then when my teacher noticed that I had a hard time reading what is written in the blackboard, so she transferred me into the first row and gave my parents a letter to ask for an eye check-up. It was confirmed that I have a poor and blurry eyesight.

Since then, I had to wear prescription eyeglasses and was instructed to only take it off when taking a bath and when it’s time to sleep. I get used to it until my high school days. But of course, there were cons that came with it, some naughty classmates teases me, nerd, “four-eyes” ,etc. So goes with unfashionable look during my JS Prom. Yes, I had to wear my glasses because we can’t afford for a contact lenses then. 🙂

Fast forward to my college years, I shifted to contact lenses but my eyes could not bear wearing it for a long period of time so I switch back to eyeglasses. Imagine not being able to clearly see your baby when you gave birth?! I have to go through that because I had to take off my eyeglasses upon giving birth eh! 🙁

I am now hoping to undergo a Boston Lasik eye surgery. I am crossing my fingers that I am a qualified candidate for the said procedure so that I can still enjoy a 20/20 vision and bid goodbye to my prescription eyeglasses.

Losing Weight For The Right Reasons

10 / 30 / 12

There’s an obsession in our society with losing weight, and being thin. The trouble is that we tend to lose weight for the wrong reasons. Here’s some examples of good and bad reasons to lose weight.

The right reasons:

To improve your fitness

Being overweight can decrease your fitness levels, because you feel demotivated and want to play Cheekybingo instead of going for a run. Losing weight will not only make it easier for you to walk up and down the stairs, it will also improve your endurance and stamina. Not to mention you’ll look more energetic.

To prevent medical conditions

Losing weight improves your overall physical well-being. Being overweight is linked to diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, to name a few. Losing weight will give you the best chance of remaining healthy.

Improve your self esteem

When you’re overweight, it will make you feel bad about yourself. By setting yourself a goal to lose just 10% of your body weight, in a reasonable amount of time, you’ll prove to yourself that you can achieve. And it will spur you on to achieve bigger and greater things.

The wrong reasons:

To be skinny

Many women feel terrible about themselves because they are not model thin. However, losing weight to be skinny is unhealthy, and doesn’t look good. If women who aren’t naturally thin go too far with their diet, it won’t suit their body type. Slim down to a healthy weight. Not a skinny one.

You’ve put your self-worth on your weight

Too many people base their self worth on their weight, which is a sad by-product of societal conditioning. Being overweight does not define you, and doesn’t make you any less worthy of happiness than a naturally slim person.

Because someone bullies you

Being teased about your weight is extremely hurtful. Unfortunately too many people accidentally use hurtful comments or bully you, because they want you to feel bad about yourself. Don’t lose weight to prove the bullies wrong. If you choose to lose eight, let it be on your terms.

The Best Exercises for Menopause

8 / 13 / 12

Many women find that they need to exercise more regularly to combat weight gain in menopause. Decreasing estrogen levels can lead to a slower metabolism and an expanding waistline. While exercise can prevent hot flashes in the long, some women get hot flashes while exercising. What types of activities are best in menopause and how can hot flashes be minimized so that exercising does not leave you wet and miserable? Read on to discover some strategies for keeping cool to help make exercising in menopause more enjoyable.

Exercising in the water is a great way to tone muscles, burn calories and stay cool. Swimming is an excellent form of exercise and can be done in a pool, lake or the ocean if you are fortunate enough to live near one. Access to an indoor pool means that you can swim year-round and stay fit. Watersports such as water skiing, surfing, diving and water aerobics done to music allow you to enjoy the invigorating feeling of coolness while getting in a necessary workout.

Walking, biking or hiking are activities that any women can enjoy, regardless of fitness level, age or health status. The important thing to remember when exercising is to warm up slowly and keep your heart rate within your target range for a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes. If you find that you become overheated and are plagued by hot flashes, exercise during cooler weather or at the coolest times of the day (early in the morning or in the evening) to minimize hot flashes. Dress in light layers so that layers can be shed as you become warm. Dress in breathable fabrics and avoid silks, nylon and polyester blends- cotton is your friend, particularly light cottons that allow some air exchange between your skin and the environment.

Winter sports like hockey, downhill or cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating and curling are excellent forms of exercise but may be difficult due to the need for warm clothing. It can be difficult to strike a balance between staying warm and not becoming overheated. Winter sports requiring a helmet may be a special kind of torture, as helmets will not allow heat to escape from the head, making hot flashes even more unbearable. If you love winter sports, be sure to stay hydrated while playing and consider a helmet liner that will absorb moisture.

Keep in mind the following tips while exercising to keep hot flashes to a minimum and enhance your enjoyment:

  • Keep your hair tied up and off your neck
  • Line helmets with a sweat band or wear a sweat band to absorb any moisture
  • Dress in layers so that layers can be removed as you become warm
  • Stay well hydrated while exercising to help your body stay cooler
  • Rest as needed to allow your body to cool down
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages before exercising
  • Wear fabrics that allow air exchange and wick moisture away from the skin
  • Try deep breathing when a hot flash hits (this can shorten the length of your hot flash)

Don’t let unpleasant hot flashes deter you from exercising and looking and feeling your best! By following these tips, you can minimize the hot flashes and maximize your workout.

Healthy Living Lifestyle

8 / 4 / 12

Health is a large word.  It embraces not the body only, but the mind and spirit as well;… and not today’s pain or pleasure alone, but the whole being and outlook of a man.  ~James H. West

We all do aim to enjoy and live our lives to the fullest. When we were young, we were taken care of and dependent on our parents for our needs. As we grow a little older and start to become independent, we’ve started to build ourselves and work to earn a living and take chances to attain our goals in life.

We’ve started to build around relationships, goals and aspirations in life. In between all these things, we should never forget our health, which is very essential key in order to fully enjoy living life.

Being healthy doesn’t not only  pertain to having a well proportioned and balanced meal three times a day, although it pays to keep yourself physically fit and all by eating the right kinds of foods. Being healthy in different aspect as well like socially, mentally and spiritually will make you a more rounded person who has a healthy living and balanced activity.

Positive outlook in life is also a part of the benefits of it. Looking back as you grow old, you tend to ask yourself, “ Have I missed on something?” Regrets kills the passion in you.

So one must be able to plan ahead as early as possible those things you want to do in your life – study, travel, business, family, leisure, vacation, dream house project and even funeral preparations to keep those people around you to less worry and have something to look forward to when you pass away.

In this manner and at the end of the day, you will be confident enough that you have lived your life well and enjoy living life in this wonderful world.

Planting Herbs and Gardening

6 / 3 / 12

If there’s one thing that I want to do if I had the luxury of time, it is to do planting and tend in our garden. It needs a lot of cleaning and improvement since the typhoon destroyed most of the plants and flowers two years ago.

I wanted to grow some herb plants like rosemary and parsley and oregano which dear daughter brought home one last year when they did some planting during their girl scout indoor camping at school, it just died a few weeks after it was submerged into the flood water.

Herbs are said to have many health benefits for the body and good for medicinal use too. I am looking around at The Growers Exchange, trying to find all the herb plants that  I want to grow in our garden 🙂

Oregano

HER-OR03-2

A culinary herb with strong spicy flavor used in italian cooking. Oregano is said to be good for shooing away those annoying mosquitoes.

Rosemary

HER-ROS08-4

An herb plant that goes well for infusing the foods with flavor. DH loves to cook Baked chikcken with rosemary. So I think it’s a must for us 🙂

Basil

HER-BAS01-2

Goes well with pasta dishes. Just the same with oregano, it is also good as natural pest repellant.

Growing plants and flowers are therapeutic too. IT feels good seeing how those tiny plants grew and bloom as useful ingredients in your kitchen and health allies. 🙂

Clean Air at Home

5 / 25 / 12

After a tiring day at work by our  busy moms and dads, a long day spent at school by kids. We all look forward to having a good rest and bonding moment with family at home.

Home is where our heart is… So we really have to ensure that we have the safe and clean surroundings at home for us to enjoy and relax. A well ventilated and properly organized house gives beneficial effect on our health. We really have to protect our loved ones from catching  asthma and other pulmonary related sickness that are usually caused by air pollution.

A clean air around the house is very important for us to breath in confidence. With all the air pollution going around outside- the road and public places, is really painful to bear. We can only do as much  as holding our breath for some seconds or using handkerchief to cover and avoid inhaling the poisonous dirty smoke and air.

One of the best way to protect us against indoor air pollution is to get air purifiers like the ones that Rabbit Air offers. They provide quality and advanced air purification system that helps in improving ones health and compliments our home decors as well. They use filters that are effective in filtering out allergens and pollutants that we breath in without those harmful byproducts chemical.
