5 Reasons Why a Plant is a Better Gift Than Cut Flowers

9 / 26 / 15

Giving plants as gifts is more popular than ever, but more people are moving away from giving one another cut flowers and opting instead to give living plants. What are some of the reasons why a plant from a place like The Gluttonous Gardener is a better gift than cut flowers? Continue reading for just five reasons.

1. The Gift Recipient Can Watch It Grow

One of the best things about a live plant is the fact that you can watch it grow for months or years to come. So what starts off as a small plant can eventually grow and bloom into a really eye-catching, beautiful centrepiece in your gift recipient’s home. Plus, the recipient can watch it grow as a direct result of his or her great care of this living thing, thinking of you every time he or she sees the plant.

2. It Will Last Longer

A plant that can last for years is in contrast to cut flowers, which only last a few days before withering and drying out only to be thrown into the trash and be forgotten. So rather than giving someone a bouquet of flowers that can bloom when placed in water, why not get them the whole plant so they can watch it grow and bloom over and over again with each passing year?

3. It’s More Environmentally Friendly

With more people becoming increasingly eco-conscious, live plants, rather than cut flowers, are becoming more popular. This is because a good portion of cut flowers that are sold in shops are actually imported from other countries, and this requires a lot of fuel that results in pollution. The plants are often grown unsustainably and foreign workers may not have labour protections, making low wages while being exposed to harmful chemicals and pesticides that aren’t only bad for people, but bad for the planet. And all of those cut flowers end up in the trash sooner or later, whether they’re sold or not, resulting in a lot of waste

4. There are a Variety of Choices

When it comes to plants, there are so many choices available. You can give someone a baby palm tree, a succulent, or a flower-producing plant that will bloom beautifully and fragrantly on a regular basis. The same options aren’t available as cut flowers, so you have a lot more choices and more variety when shopping for live plants to give as gifts than when you shop for cut flowers at a florist.

5. It Can Be Planted in a Garden

Finally, your gift can be planted in the recipient’s garden, provided that the conditions are optimal and that the weather throughout the year will allow the plant to thrive. So in addition to watching the plant grow in a pot inside the home, it can also grow even more beautifully surrounded by other trees, shrubs, and flowers outside.

With so many great reasons to give live plants rather than cut flowers as gifts, you can start creating unique gifts for every special occasion and every special person in your life.

Cactus and Succulents

3 / 25 / 15

 photo IMG167.jpg
cactus! I just don’t know what are the particular names for each of them. I used to call the farthest one, brocolli. the middle one as tomato, the third one with red pricks as fingerly cactus. hahaha

 photo IMG168.jpg
cactus

I bought these cactuses late last year. It was only last Monday, that I was able to repot all of them. Not in the photo is the Jade plant, that I am  trying to regrow because there is only one remaining stem of it with few leaves as others already died due to over watering ( I guess!).

I started home gardening early last year as I saw my co-workers’ photo of her growing indoor plants (Pechay and Lettuce) and I got really interested too. She gave me some seeds and was able to grow and harvest them. For now, I also have planted some chili and peppers directly to soil in the garden (will show photos of them the next time) and I hope that they would really survive this time around.

I’d be adding up a few more of these cactus as I would be making my very own cactus and succulent garden. If you’re a follower of mine over at Pinterest. You can see that I’ve been pinning around a lot of inspiration of cactus and succulents in my Home Gardening Board 🙂

Can’t really wait for these prickly creatures to bore flowers soon!

Five Tips to Help a Potted Plant Flourish

10 / 3 / 12

Potted plants can add beauty and variety to a home or office, and they are a practical way of preparing a plant to be grown outside. No matter what the reason for starting a plant in a pot, there are certain tips to keep in mind when taking care of it.

Pick a good pot

The right container does not have to be a traditional pot, but it does need to meet certain guidelines. Choose a container with holes in the bottom, because then any excess water can drain appropriately. In order to achieve the right balance, it is also important to place a plate under the container; this helps to prevent leaking. This way, the potted plant has some control over its own hydration.

Use a potting mix

It is tempting to grab a shovel and use dirt directly from the backyard, but this will usually not work out the way it is planned. Soil must be purchased pre-packaged from the store, because soil taken from elsewhere will probably contain bugs or fungi. These can be especially harmful to new plants. Additionally, packaged soil may come with time-released fertilizer. This is particularly helpful, because it helps keep the plant nourished consistently.

Sun versus shade plants

Know the difference, and know where the new plant will be planted ahead of time. Then go to the store, and select a plant that is suited for the amount of light available. Some plants can thrive in the shade, but other plants require a lot of direct sunlight. The store will post signs making the plant’s sunlight and water needs very clear. Follow these to a tee.

Trim dead leaves

Some people are afraid to do this, because they think it is harmful to the plant. Instead, dead or dying leaves are potential sources of mould and fungi, so removing them can save the plant in the long run. Best of all, plants are equipped with the ability to grow new leaves to replace old ones. Sometimes, it is possible to just trim off part of a leaf, but other times the whole leaf needs to go. It all depends on the extent of the damage. Removing dead leaves will also allow water and nutrients to go where the plant can really use them.

Fertilize often

Usually, it is best to add fertilizer about every two weeks. Proper watering can dilute or even rinse out nutrients. Fertilizer is essential, especially during a plant’s infancy. It is similar to how a baby needs special nutrients in order to develop properly. Young plants are going through a similar sort of development, and fertilizer can ensure that the plant will grow to its full potential. Most importantly, treat the plant with love, and be patient as it grows. Remember that plants are living organisms and need to be nurtured and cared for in order to truly flourish.

7 Inspiring Ideas for Creating a Low Maintenance Backyard

10 / 2 / 12
Use Rocks & Pebbles to Eliminate Work

While natural grass is very aesthetically pleasing, it can become a hassle to maintain – particularly if you already have a busy lifestyle. Designer rocks and pebbles can be purchased from landscaping supply stores and make for great additions to any garden or backyard. While I’m not suggesting that you need to cover your entire yard with lose rocks, creating portions of stone feature pieces can really enhance an area, while also helping to create a low maintenance backyard.

Research your Plant & Flower Choices

Researching the plant and flower species most suited to your climate and needs is a must for any low maintenance garden. Drought tolerant species of flora are easy to maintain and can stand a little neglect, should life get busy. If you have children or animals, opt for plants without thorns and always steer clear of poisonous varieties.

Create Designated Areas of the Yard

To maintain your desired design, create designated areas within your backyard. If you have children, for instance, create a special play area for them, as this will make clean up time and packing away toys a breeze. Separating grassed areas from planter boxes also helps to create a safer play environment for your family.

Create Pathways

Imagine you’ve just mowed your lawn, weeded your garden and watered your plants – only to have 40 or so guests arrive to trample all over your proud, garden masterpiece. Eliminate the extra work of maintaining a yard with heavy foot traffic, by adding a path to major areas. If you have a clothesline in your backyard, for instance, make a clear walkway to this area. If guests pass through your yard to enter the house, also create an attractive path to and from your front door.

Consider Slopes & Angles

Always consider the angle or slope of your block of land. Steep angles can be a nightmare to mow, creating more unnecessary work. If you cannot eliminate slopes in your backyard, create a smart living area, by using these sections as gardens with mulch or stone ground cover. When building a new home it is important to take the slope of the block into consideration. Many of the leading builders Toowoomba has to offer work closely with landscape gardeners to complete the overall house and land product.

Use Mulch

Plants and flowers really do make a backyard something special, but they can also create a great deal of work. Using mulch will help to eliminate unnecessary work and also assists in decreasing the growth of weeds.

Implement Regular Garden Maintenance Sessions

While it may sound like more hard work, regularly maintaining your garden takes the stress and long hours out of having the perfect garden. Pulling a few small weeds, in comparison to weeding your whole backyard, will seem like a breeze and you won’t begin to detest your beautiful garden. Getting your family involved can also create time for some great fun, while also taking all of the hard work away from little old you! Working as a team, you’ll have the garden looking spick and span in no time!

Planting Herbs and Gardening

6 / 3 / 12

If there’s one thing that I want to do if I had the luxury of time, it is to do planting and tend in our garden. It needs a lot of cleaning and improvement since the typhoon destroyed most of the plants and flowers two years ago.

I wanted to grow some herb plants like rosemary and parsley and oregano which dear daughter brought home one last year when they did some planting during their girl scout indoor camping at school, it just died a few weeks after it was submerged into the flood water.

Herbs are said to have many health benefits for the body and good for medicinal use too. I am looking around at The Growers Exchange, trying to find all the herb plants that  I want to grow in our garden 🙂

Oregano

HER-OR03-2

A culinary herb with strong spicy flavor used in italian cooking. Oregano is said to be good for shooing away those annoying mosquitoes.

Rosemary

HER-ROS08-4

An herb plant that goes well for infusing the foods with flavor. DH loves to cook Baked chikcken with rosemary. So I think it’s a must for us 🙂

Basil

HER-BAS01-2

Goes well with pasta dishes. Just the same with oregano, it is also good as natural pest repellant.

Growing plants and flowers are therapeutic too. IT feels good seeing how those tiny plants grew and bloom as useful ingredients in your kitchen and health allies. 🙂
